And that premiere date is deliberate. Set right before Christmas, the movie follows a family whose holiday takes an unexpected turn when their mother’s health fails. But June, played by Helen Mirren, remains determined to face her illness on her own terms. With an all-star cast of British acting talent, “Goodbye June” could end up a big end-of-the-year hit for the streamer.
Here’s an official synopsis for the film, courtesy of Netflix:
The film takes place just before Christmas, when an unexpected turn in their mother’s health thrusts four adult siblings and their exasperating father into chaos as they navigate messy family dynamics in the face of potential loss. But their quick-witted mother, June, orchestrates her decline on her own terms — with biting humour, blunt honesty, and a lot of love.
“Goodbye June” stars Toni Collette, Johnny Flynn, Andrea Riseborough, Timothy Spall, Winslet, and Mirren. Additional cast includes Stephen Merchant, Fisayo Akinade, Jeremy Swift, and Raza Jaffrey.
Winslet directs a script by Joe Anders for her directorial debut. She also produces the film with Kate Solomon.
“Goodbye June” gets a theatrical release in select US & UK theaters on December 12 before it premieres on Netflix on December 24. Watch a trailer for the film below.
