The outlet reports that McCarthy’s still-untitled new project will star Paul Rudd, Evan Peters, Amy Ryan, Paul Giamatti, John Turturro, Tatiana Maslany, and Jason Clarke. Based on Nathaniel Rich‘s 2019 book “Losing Earth,” the dark comedy takes place in Florida in 1980, and follows a weekend conference where twenty experts and policymakers discuss the effects of CO2 emissions on the climate. Their goal, via Congress? Writing a mandate on how to combat climate change, a task that may prove harder than any of them realize.
McCarthy adapts Rich’s book with Thomas Bidegan and Noé Debré, and plans to start shooting next month. Jonathan King and David Levine lead producers via Anonymous Content, along with Jim Whitaker, Rae Baron, and McCarthy via Slow Pony. Other producers include Jonathan Schwartz, Nick Shumaker, and Brad Dorros of Anonymous Content, and Mary Aloe from Aloe Entertainment. The film will be co-financed by Sony Classics, with SPC releasing it domestically.
Executive producers on McCarthy’s latest are myriad, with Matt Damon and Ben Affleck among them via Artists Equity. Others include Alex Gibney, Wendy Schmidt, Richard Perello, and Robert Kessel for Jigsaw Productions; Alex Lebovici for Hammerstone Studios; Bidegan, Debré, and Rich; Billy James Parrott; Laurene Powell Jobs and Davis Guggenheim for Concordia; Andrew Lauren and Blye Faust on behalf of Andrew Lauren Productions; and Rob Rosenheck for Galisteo Media.
Now let’s investigate that cast sheet. Rudd has “Avengers: Doomsday,” “Power Ballad,” and “Rain Reign” on the way. Peters currently stars in “The Beauty,” and film-wise is coming off of last year’s “Tron: Ares.” Ryan starred in two Apple joints, “Wolfs” and “Sugar” Season 1, in 2024. Giamatti has Jesse Eisenberg‘s latest directing effort and the TV show “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy” upcoming in 2026.
Torturro stars next in “The Only Living Pickpocket In New York,” which just had buzzy fest screenings at Sundance and the Berlinale, with a theatrical release slated for this Fall. Coincidentally, Maslany also co-stars in that one, and also has “The Young People,” “Any Other Night,” and the Apple TV+ series “Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed” on the way this year. Finally, Clarke just starred in the limited series “Murdaugh: Death In The Family,” as well as “Wind River: The Next Chapter” and “F.A.S.T.” upcoming, although those won’t reach audiences until 2027.
With production on McCarthy’s latest starting next month, expect the film in theaters sometime in 2027. Stay tuned for whether or not it gets a festival debut.
