‘The Exorcist’: Laurence Fishburne The Latest To Join Mike Flanagan’s Upcoming Horror Pic

Mike Flanagan is assembling quite the ensemble to star in his upcoming reboot of “The Exorcist.” Now Variety reports that he’s cast another big name to join Scarlett Johansson, Diane Lane, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Jacobi Jupe: Laurence Fishburne. It’ll be the first time Fishburne and Flanagan work together, unlike the also recently cast Ejiofor, who worked on Flanagan’s previous film, “The Life Of Chuck.”

As for who Fishburne plays in “The Exorcist,” that’s under wraps for now, but news about that should break once Flanagan starts shooting the film in NYC this summer. Flanagan’s film is an all-new story set in the world of “The Exorcist”; it is not (and Universal Pictures no doubt wants to emphasize this) in any way related to 2023’s critical disaster, “The Exorcist: Believer.” Universal has Flanagan’s pic slated for a March 12, 2027 theatrical release.

Flanagan writes, directs, and produces “The Exorcist” via his Red Room Pictures. Alexandra Magistro executive produces via the same banner. Other producers on the horror pic include David Robinson through Morgan Creek and Jason Blum via Blumhouse-Atomic Monster; Ryan Turek executive produces via Blumhouse-Atomic Monster.

Fishburne is coming off a 2025 where he starred in “The Amateur,” “Sneaks,” and “The Astronaut.” He also had a role in Netflix‘s “The Witcher” last year. Of course, movie fans know the actor best as Morpheus from “The Matrix” films, but Fishburne’s stature goes well beyond that franchise. He’s legendary in works as diverse as “The Color Purple,” “King Of New York,” and “Deep Cover,” among others.

As noted earlier, “The Exorcist” arrives in theaters on March 12, 2027.
