A24‘s early 2026 theatrical slate includes a number of buzzy films: Kristofer Borgli‘s “The Drama,” the Cannes 2025 favorite “Pillion,” and the latest Glen Powell vehicle, “How To Make A Killing.” Also in the mix? “undertone,” a horror pic that made waves at Fantasia International Film Festival last summer.

And as its title suggests, sound design-induced tension is front and center in “undertone.” The film follows the host of a paranormal podcast who receives recordings from a married couple of strange sounds in their house, inciting a descent into madness.

A podcast host covering spooky content moves in to care for her dying mother. When sent recordings of a pregnant couple’s paranormal encounters, she discovers their story parallels hers, each tape pushing her toward madness.
“undertone” stars Nina Kiri, Adam DiMarco, Michèle Duquet, Keana Lyn Bastidas, and Jeff Yung.
Ian Tuason writes and directs “undertone,” his feature directorial debut. Producers on the film include Cody Calahan and Dan Slater. Executive producers are Al Akdari, Chad Archibald, Melodie Austria, Charles Bern, Anthony Eu, Daril Fannin, Douglas Lee, Roy Lee, Brit MacRae, Steven Schneider, David Sproat, and Matthew Sterling.
As noted earlier, “undertone” had its world prmiere at the 29th Fantasia International Film Festival last summer, where it won the Gold Audience Award for Canadian films. A24 snagged the rights to the picture a couple of months later, slating it for an early 2026 theatrical release.
