‘The Last Of Us’: Peter Sarsgaard Joins Season 3 Of HBO’s Post-Apocalyptic Series, Production On Hiatus For World Cup

The Last Of Us” S3 has yet another new name on the ensemble cast sheet, alongside the additions of Patrick Wilson and Jason Ritter: Peter Sarsgaard. Deadline reports that the actor joins the cast of HBO‘s post-apocalyptic series as Amon, one of the leaders of the Seraphites. It’s Sarsgaard’s second major role for HBO in recent years, “DTF St. Louis” being the other.

Sarsgaard’s casting also comes in the midst of a planned production break for “The Last Of Us” S3 due to the start of the FIFA World Cup. That’s because Vancouver, where the show’s production is based, is one of the host cities for the tournament, and crowds and tourism over the next several weeks will no doubt complicate on-location shooting. Production will resume once the World Cup ends, with S3 still on pace to premiere on HBO and HBO Max sometime in 2027. Whether S3 will be the final season of “The Last Of Us” remains to be seen.

Other new cast members for “The Last Of Us” S3 include the aforementioned Wilson as Jerry Anderson, the father of Abby, played by Kaitlyn Dever. Meanwhile, Ritter plays Hanley, a WLF soldier. Michelle Mao, Kyriana Kratter, Li Jun Li, and Clea Duvall round out the new additions.

Based on the popular Naughty Dog video game series of the same name, “The Last Of Us” takes place two decades after modern civilizaiton collapses after a fungal virus devastates the world’s population. Season 1 centered on Pedro Pascal‘s Joel, tasked with smuggling Bella Ramsey‘s Ellie, who may hold a cure to the disease. Season 2 picked up five years after the events of Season 1, with Dever’s Abby gradually supplanting herself as the show’s new main character. Season 3 will focus on Abby and her involvement with Amon’s Seraphites group, but further plot details haven’t been revealed yet.

Craig Mazin returns as sole showrunner for “The Last Of Us” S3; game creator Neil Druckmann, who also served in that capacity in S1/S2, isn’t back for this batch of episodes.

As for Sarsgaard, he adds “The Last Of Us” S3 to a list of upcoming projects that includes “Road House 2” and Apple TV‘s “Neuromancer.” He starred in his wife Maggie Gyllenhaal‘s “The Bride!” earlier this year. Given this casting, it’s worth noting that Sarsgaard is a two-time Emmy nominee, for the Hulu limited series “Dopesick” and Apple TV’s “Presumed Innocent.” Don’t be surprised if his role as Amon notches him another nomination.

Stay tuned for more details about “The Last Of Us” Season 3, including its official premiere date on HBO and HBO Max, as they arrive.
