With “Promising Young Woman” and “Saltburn,” Emerald Fennell swiftly became one of the industry’s hottest new female directors. But her follow-up to those two films, a new take on a classic and beloved Emily Brontë novel, may define Fennell’s legacy, and whether she’ll remain a major Hollywood voice.
That’s because Fennell’s adaptation of “Wuthering Heights” is full of bold choices, like Margot Robbie playing a character who’s a teenager in Brontë’s novel. Or Australian Jacob Elordi playing a character described as “dark-skinned” in the book. Or Charli xcx supplying an entire album worth of new music for a film set in the late 18th century.
And then there’s the sheer overt eroticism of Fennell’s vision, on full display in the new trailer linked below. Will this audacious pay off? Audiences will find out next Valentine’s Day when the film hits theaters.
Here’s an official synopsis for “Wuthering Heights,” courtesy of Warner Bros.:
A bold and original imagining of one of the greatest love stories of all time, Emerald Fennell’s “WUTHERING HEIGHTS” stars Margot Robbie as Cathy and Jacob Elordi as Heathcliff, whose forbidden passion for one another turns from romantic to intoxicating in an epic tale of lust, love and madness.
Along with Robbie and Elordi, “Wuthering Heights” also stars Hong Chau, Shazad Latif, Alison Oliver, Martin Clunes, and Ewan Mitchell.
Fennell writes and directs the film, adapting Brontë’s novel for the big screen. She also produces the film with Josey McNamara and Robbie, with Tom Acklerey and Sara Desmond serving as executive producers.
“Wuthering Heights” hits theaters on February 13, 2026. Watch the new trailer for Emerald Fennell’s latest below.
