Does legendary TV producer and comedian Lorne Michaels even need an introduction? Hardly: the longevity of “Saturday Night Live,” Michaels’ most heralded creation, and its fifty-year history speaks for itself. Late-night TV wouldn’t be what it is today without that show or Michaels’ enduring influence, even if much of the man’s impact remains quietly behind the scenes.

But “Lorne,” Morgan Neville‘s doc on the Michaels, wishes to offer a more intimate look at the man who mostly prefers to stay behind the late-night curtain. The film, which hits theaters next month, charts the early career and ascendance of the now 81-year-old Michaels and “SNL,” complete with new interviews with some of the show’s most beloved alumni. Along with new exclusive and archival footage, “Lorne” includes interviews with past and present “SNL” cast and crew, including Tina Fey, Maya Rudolph, John Mulaney, Andy Samberg, Conan O’Brien, Chris Rock, and more.
“Won’t You Be My Neighbor” filmmaker Neville directs “Lorne,” one of several recent docs for him. “Man On The Run,” about Paul McCartney‘s time with the band Wings, just hit Prime Video last month, and “Breakdown: 1975” premiered on Netflix last December. Neville also produces “Lorne” with Lauren Belfer.
