‘The Hunt For Gollum’: Andy Serkis Confirms That Aragorn Will Be Recast In Upcoming ‘Lord Of The Rings’ Film

Who will play Aragorn in “The Lord Of The Rings: The Hunt For Gollum“? Director Andy Serkis doesn’t know, but he confirmed to ScreenRant that the iconic role that Viggo Mortensen played in Peter Jackson‘s original trilogy will be recast.

“I don’t know what’s out there at the moment, but I know there’s a lot of speculation, but let’s just say we are recasting the role and we are on the way to finding someone,” Serkis said to the outlet in a new interview. The confirmation comes on the heels of “The Lord Of The Rings” star Elijah Wood hinting that Mortensen wouldn’t be back on a new episode of the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast. As for the actor who will replace Mortensen? Rumors swirl, but there’s been no official casting yet.

The only confirmed cast for “The Hunt For Gollum” are Serkis as Gollum, Ian McKellan as Gandalf, and franchise newcomer Kate Winslet. However, Serkis kept secret who Winslet would play. “We’ve got to keep it all back,” Serkis said in response to providing any details about Winslet’s role or further plot points. “I mean, look, other than, I think it’s probably common knowledge, but our film takes place between “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings,” and it’s “The Hunt for Gollum.” It is a physical hunt for the character, but also a psychological hunt for himself. So we’re just about on the launchpad now, and it’s very exciting. And yeah, it’s going to be a big ride.”

In other words, Serkis wants to keep everything about “The Hunt For Gollum” very close to the chest for now. But the actor and director did promise that the new film would feel like a continuation of Jackson’s two trilogies. “It will feel like a proper Middle-earth film, there’s no question,” Serkis continued, “but there is a much more internal psychological investigation into one of Tolkien’s most complex characters, i.e., Gollum. So it’s a very interesting mix, and I think it is a tightrope for sure. A lot of the filmmaking techniques are ones…which harken back to the first trilogy.”

Still, Mortensen’s not returning as Aragorn will make “The Hunt For Gollum” feel separate from Jackson’s first trilogy. But maybe Serkis will find the perfect replacement. Expect further casting news for the film soon, because it hits theaters on December 17, 2027, and shooting begins next month.
