‘Blasphemous’: Karen Gillan, Josh Hutcherson & Clive Owen To Star In Exorcism Horror Pic That’s ‘Hellraiser’ Scribe’s Directorial Debut

Mike Flanagan‘s “The Exorcist” reboot isn’t the only upcoming horror pic to deal with demonic possession. THR reports that another exorcism movie, titled “Blasphemous,” will make the rounds at Berlin‘s European Film Market next week. The film will be the directorial debut for screenwriter Luke Piotrowski, who penned the recent “Hellraiser” reboot and last year’s “She Rides Shotgun.”

Karen Gillan, Josh Hutcherson, and Clive Owen have already signed on to star in “Blasphemous,” about two priests tasked with transporting a possessed young woman to a secure location so they may perform an exorcism, only for her to unexpectedly escape and wreak havoc. That sounds promising, like a mix between “The Exorcist” and a road-chase movie like “The Hitcher.”

Piotrowski’s script, written in 2023, had a lot of fans in Tinsel Town even before North.Five.Six swooped in to finance the project. Michael Rothstein, Sam Hall, and Warren Goz will executive produce the film through that banner (they’re behind recent films like “Regretting You” and Gore Verbinski‘s “Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die“) and will launch its worldwide sales at EFM. Other producers involved include Scott Strauss via his Badlands banner, Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee for Thunder Road and Dwayne Johnson, Dany Garcia, and Hiram Garcia via Seven Bucks Productions. Gillan also produces with Jess Biddle via Red Riot Pictures.

“”Blasphemous” is one of the best scripts the collective producer group has ever read,” Strauss said in a press statement. “It’s a one-of-a-kind genre ride that features sharp dialogue, compelling characters, and powerful ideas.”

Gillan adds “Blasphemous” to a list of upcoming projects that includes the next “Jumanji” sequel and Chad Stahelski‘s “Highlander.” As for Hutcherson, he has “The Hunger Games: Sunrise On The Reaping” on the way, while Owen is currently filming “Kristallnacht,” a pre-WWII thriller that may arrive in theaters before the year is out.

“Blasphemous” will see Piotrowski working without Ben Collins, who co-penned the likes of “Hellraiser,” “She Rides Shotgun,” and 2020’s “The Night House” with him.

Piotrowski plans to start shooting his directorial debut in New York this August, so expect “Blasphemous” in theaters sometime in 2027.
