The Cameron Diaz comeback train continues at full steam, with the actress set to star alongside Stephen Merchant (who also directs) in an untitled rom-com over at Amazon MGM Studios. But now another big name is on the cast sheet: Rob Lowe.
Deadline reports that the veteran film and TV actor joins the cast that also includes Jake Lacy, Josh Segarra, Sherry Cola, Judith Light, Myra Lucretia Taylor, Fabrizio Guido, Liza Gilroy, and Dustin Ybarra. Along with directing, Merchant co-writes the film with John Butler, and also produces with Lee Eisenberg. Other producers include Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, James Weaver, and Josh Fagen via Point Grey Pictures. Natalie Sandy will executive produce.
But what’s the set-up of this rom-com? Well, it revolves around a fake marriage between Merchant’s NYC hotel employee and Diaz’s struggling stand-up comedienne, with what starts out as a transactional relationship becomes unexpectedly romantic. As for who Lowe will play? No one knows yet.
Lowe has worked regularly on both the big and small screens in recent years, with the Netflix comedy “Unstable” his most notable work. Other recent projects for the actor include hosting the game show “The Floor” and the documentary “Brats.” He stars next in “The Musical” (which just had its world premiere at Sundance 2026), “The Third Parent,” and “My New Friend Jim.”
As for Diaz, she returned to the big screen in 2025’s “Back In Action” on Netflix. Other upcoming work for the actress includes “Shrek 7,” Jonah Hill‘s “Outcome,” and another Netflix actioner, “Bad Day.”
As for comedian Merchant, this rom-com is his first outing as director since 2019’s “Fighting With My Family.”
