Talk about an about-face no one expected from TV producer Ryan Murphy. After a decade-plus of making primarily horror anthology series for FX and Netflix (including “The Beauty,” premiering now), Murphy’s next FX show is a “Love Story,” very different from the rest of his “American Story” franchise. Also, it premieres tonight, with three episodes debuting on FX and Hulu.

Inspired by Elizabeth Beller‘s book “Once Upon A Time: The Captivating Life Of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy,” “Love Story: John F. Kennedy & Carolyn Bessette” explores the courtship and high-profile marriage of one of the 20th century’s most iconic couples. Paul Anthony Kelly stars as JFK Jr., and Sarah Pidgeon stars as Bessette. Read on for an official synopsis:
It was a love story that captured the attention of the nation: John F. Kennedy Jr. was the closest thing to American royalty. The country watched him grow from a boy to a beloved bachelor and media sensation. Bessette was a star in her own right. Fiercely independent and with a singular style, she rose from being a sales assistant to an executive at Calvin Klein, and became a trusted confidante of its eponymous founder. John and Carolyn’s connection was immediate, electric and undeniable. As their love story unfolded on a national stage, the intense fame and media attention that came along with it threatened to rip them apart.
Along with Kelly and Pidgeon, the limited series also stars Grace Gummer, Naomi Watts, Alessandro Nivola, Leila George, Sydney Lemmon, and Constance Zimmer.
Connor Hines serves as creator on “Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette,” with Murphy leading executive producers. Other executive producers on the series include Hines, Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, Eric Kovtun, Nisa Diederich, Scott Robertson, Monica Levinson, Kim Rosenstock, D.V. DeVincentis, and Tanase Popa. Max Winkler also executive produces and directs the show’s pilot episode.
Three episodes of “Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette” premiere tonight live on FX at 9:00p EST, and stream on Hulu at the same time. New episodes premiere every subsequent Thursday through its nine-episode run. Watch the new trailer for the limited series below.
