‘Talk To Me’: Meta, XRTV & The Phillipous Team Up For Immersive Streaming Series Based On 2022 Horror Film

What are the Phillipou brothers (aka: RackaRacka) up to after now that “Bring Her Back,” their latest horror film, is in the rearview mirror? Variety reports they’ll return to the world of their 2022 feature debut “Talk To Me,” albeit with a high-tech twist (and the Philliopous only in a producing role).

No, this isn’t the sequel that the Danny and Michael Phillipou plan to make for that film. Instead, the duo will team up with Meta and XRTV to produce an untitled spinoff series that uses immersive XR experience to intensify the horror of “the Hand.” Here’s a brief synopsis for the untitled series, which will run for six 30-minute episodes: “a group of young travelers chasing the ultimate party on a European island until they discover the Hand, a supernatural high deadlier than any drug.”

The press release for the show also boosts its as “”Euphoria” with possession,” so expect the series to lean further into the party sequences from the 2022 film. But what about the use of Meta headsets here? Well, the entire show will be shot in 3D.  ” “The live-action series will also harness cutting-edge mixed reality technology to map viewers’ environments and immerse them in the story,” reads a press statement from Meta.  That sounds like an intriguing use of the platform, albeit one limited to those up to splurging on a Meta headset in the first place.

Darren Brandl and Trent Atherton pitched the series to Meta and the Phillipous, with Atherton writing all six episodes. TV vet Craig William Macneill will direct the series: a good choice, given his work on “Castle Rock” and “The Terror.” Executive producers on the show include Brandl, Jack Davis via XRTV, the Phillipous, Samantha Jennings and Kristina Ceyton via Causeway Films, Andreas Michael Wentz and Juan Antonio Cano Trujillo for Sur Film, and Jeff Rich via Meta.

XRTV is a new venture from Crypt TV co-founders Brandl and Jack Davis that focuses on immersive storytelling such as 3D, AR, VR, MR and spherical screens.  Brandl hopes the “Talk To Me” series will kick off a new era in TV and streaming culture, as per his press statement. “The promise of XR is this idea that we can now map the story into your own space so you feel like you’re inside it,” he said.

“It’s a big leap past the previous 3D and immersive shows we’ve produced, because now, the canvas is your living room,” Brandl continued. “Its superpower is presence: that awe of being transported, the unsettling feeling that a demon is with you — in your room. “Talk to Me” is the perfect immersive IP because it’s about young adults who seek the Hand, to experience the euphoria of possession but end up tormented by breaking through to the spirit world. It made possession fun, and the scares unforgettable. Maybe we’re crazy, but we’re betting you’re going to want to feel possessed too, and with Meta’s new technology, we think for the first time you’ll believe it!”

As for the Phillipous’ “Talk To Me,” sequel, no word on when they’ll get started on it.  But this new series sounds like a novel take on their debut films’ set-up.  The major issue is how big an audience it’ll cull, given its release on Meta: will audiences want to invest in the equipment necessary to have an immersive show experience like this?  The answer to that question also answers whether this project will be a success.
