‘Anaconda’ Final Trailer: Sony’s Meta-Sequel Starring Jack Black & Paul Rudd Hits Theaters On Christmas

And now, the final trailer for a movie no one asked for, “Anaconda“; given its setup, Sony Pictures may be well aware of that, too. In Papyrus font and shimmery aqua-blue lettering, the teaser pronounces this meta-comedy, and not James Cameron‘s “Avatar: Fire And Ash,” as the epic cinematic event of the holiday season.

That’s all in jest, of course, but one can’t help but see it as an admission on Sony’s part that they have a dud on their hands. Will the star power of Jack Black and Paul Rudd be able to steady this quasi-remake of the 1997 film to at least modest box office success against the likes of Cameron’s latest sequel and “Marty Supreme“? Doubtful, but then schlock like this serves as good counter-programming to blockbusters and Oscar contenders.

Here’s an official synopsis for “Anaconda,” courtesy of Sony Pictures:

Doug (Jack Black) and Griff (Paul Rudd) have been best friends since they were kids, and have always dreamed of remaking their all-time favorite movie: the cinematic “classic” Anaconda. When a midlife crisis pushes them to finally go for it, they head deep into the Amazon to start filming. But things get real when an actual giant anaconda appears, turning their comically chaotic movie set into a deadly situation. The movie they’re dying to make? It might just get them killed……

Along with Black and Rudd, “Anaconda” also stars Steve Zahn, Thandiwe Newton, Daniela Melchior, and Selton Mello. Oh, and a star of the 1997 original will be back, too, but watch the trailer below to discover who that is…

Tom Gormican directs a script by him and Kevin Etten for “Anaconda.” Gormican and Ettern also serve as lead producers, alongside Brad Fuller and Andrew Form. Samson Mücke is also on board as an executive producer.

So, will “Anaconda” strangle its theatrical competition on Christmas Day? Don’t count on it. Watch the final trailer for the comedy below.
