Wow, what a lineup this is. Deadline reports that Italian director Alice Rohrwacher has her cast sheet ready for her next film, an adaptation of Audrey Niffenegger’s “Three Incestuous Sisters.” At the top of it? A reunion with “La Chimera” star Josh O’Connor. But then come three of the buzziest actresses working today: Dakota Johnson, Saoirse Ronan, and Jessie Buckley. That’s a hell of a foursome for Rohrwacher to work with.

What’s more, Rohrwacher also works with novelist Ottessa Moshfegh on the adapted screenplay of Niffenegger’s novel; the word is it’s a loose adaptation, so plot details are under wraps. The 2005 illustrated novel follows three sisters whose lives unravel when they all fall in love with the same man, with plenty of sabotage, tragedy, and gothic madness. That sounds like an excellent premise for Rohrwacher to work with, and anyone familiar with Moshfegh’s work will recognize how well she fits the source material.
Indian Paintbrush will produce and finance “Three Incestuous Sisters” through Steven Rales. Other producers include Rohrwacher, as well as Johnson and Ro Donnelly via TeaTime Pictures. Shooting on the project begins in April, though it’s unclear whether Rohrwacher will shoot in her native Italy, as she often does.
Now, the cast (and what a cast!). Johnson is coming off the romantic combo of “Materialists” and “Splitsville,” with “Verity” on the way later this year.
Meanwhile, Ronan is currently shooting Sam Mendes’ “Beatles” quartet, with “The Outrun” her last major film role; “Bad Apples” also hits theaters this year.
Then Buckley is up for a Best Actress Oscar for “Hamnet” after winning a Golden Globe for her role in Chloe Zhao’s picture, with “The Bride!” in theaters next weekend.
Finally, O’Connor recently starred in the latest “Knives Out” mystery, “Wake Up Dead Man,” as well as Kelly Reichardt’s “The Mastermind,” and “The History Of Sound.” Up next for the actor? Steven Spielberg’s “Disclosure Day” is in theaters on June 12.
Meanwhile, Rohrwacher had her best stateside success a few years ago with “La Chimera.” Other films for her include “The Wonders” and “Happy As Lazzaro.”
Stay tuned for more details on “Three Incestuous Sisters,” which will almost certainly bow at a major festival in 2027.
