‘Postinato’: Matthew McConaughey & Zoe Saldaña To Star In Romantic Caper Over At Netflix, ‘Tuner’ Director Daniel Roher To Helm

Matthew McConaughey’s career resurgence continues, as he’s set to star in an upcoming Netflix pic opposite Zoe Saldaña.  Deadline reports that the pair will star in “Positano,” a romantic capter from “Tuner” director Daniel Roher.  It’s McConaughey’s third film since his five-year hiatus from live-action parts, after “The Lost Bus” and “The Rivals Of Amziah King,” a film that Black Bear still needs to provide a theatrical release.

So what’s “Positano” about?  Plot details are under wraps right now, but the film is set in the Italian town it’s named after.  Alessandro Tanaka and Brian Gatewood co-pen the script, with Eric Fellner an Tim Bevan producing via Working Title.  Others in the mix include Amelia Granger, who executive produces through the same banner.

The word is that Working Title landed the script shortly after it hit the market, and shopped it to Roher, McConaughey and Saldaña over the past couple of weeks.  After all three signed on, Netflix signed on, too, and the studio wants to fast-track it for a shooting date next year.

“Positano” will be McConaughey’s first time working with Netflix; or technically second, but it’s unclear if “Postinato” will shoot before Nic Pizzolato‘s sports drama series he’ll star in, another Netflix joint. This isn’t Saldaña’s first rodeo with the streamer, however.  The “Avatar: Fire And Ash” actress has previously starred in “The Adam Project” and “From Scratch” for the streamer, as well as “Emilia Pérez,” the divisive Jacques Audiard musical that Netflix scooped up at Cannes 2024.  Other upcoming work for Saldaña includes “The Bluff,” a swashbuckling blockbuster over at Amazon MGM Studios.  As for McConaughey?  His pipeline is light, with “Amziah King” likely getting a release sometime next year.

As for Roher, “Postinato” will be his biggest film to date, but he’s had major festival sucess before.  The first time came with 2022’s “Navalny,” which won an Oscar for Best Documentary Feature and Sundance’s Festival Favorite Award that year.  His narrative feature debut, “Tuner,” also fared well after its world premiere at Telluride this year.  The off-beat crime film starring Dustin Hoffman, Leo Woodall, and Havana Rose Liu also screening at TIFF this year, with Black Bear snatching up it distribution rights at that fest.  Expect “Tuner” to also receive a 2026 theatrical release.

Stay tuned for more details on “Postinato” as they arrive.
