It’s not much, but the first look at Martin Scorsese‘s “What Happens At Night” should be enough to parse the general tone of the master director’s next feature at Apple. The still shows the film’s stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence walking together in a rural and snowy European landscape, with a period taxi cab behind them. Again, not a lot to go on, but the stark, wintry atmosphere and the bright, albeit subdued, lighting hint at the dream-like tone Scorsese’s next pic will have.
Based on Peter Cameron‘s novel of the same name, “What Happens At Night” follows a married American couple who travel to a small European town to adopt a baby. However, not everything in the town is what it seems, including its frozen-in-time hotel, and the couple soon spiral into confusion: about themselves, where they are, and the life they’ve built together.
First announced last September, Scorsese’s latest also stars Mads Mikkelsen, Patricia Clarkson, Jared Harris, and Welker White. Patrick Marber adapts Cameron’s novel for the film, with Scorsese producing via Sikelia Productions. Other producers include DiCaprio, Lawrence, and Daniel Lupi.
Executive producers on the film include Lisa Frechette and Marianne Bower via Sikelia, Jennifer Davisson via Appian Way, and Justine Ciarrocchi via Excellent Cadaver. Anna Marsh, Shana Eddy Grouf, and Aaron Ensweiler also executive produce for Studiocanal.
Expect Apple to aim for a festival premiere for “What Happens At Night,” as well as a huge awards season rollout, in no small part due to the film being Scorsese and DiCaprio’s seventh film together. The pair last worked together on “Killers Of The Flower Moon,” another Apple production. Lawrence has her own longstanding relationship with the studio, having previously starred in films like “Causeway,” “Bread & Roses,” and the upcoming mystery, “The Wives.”
“What Happens At Night” is in production now in the Czech Republic. Take a look at the first look image from the film below.
