THR reports that “Final Destination: Bloodlines” directors Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein will helm a movie based on “Metal Gear Solid,” Hideo Kojima‘s long-running video game title. The film is the first project of Lipovsky and Stein’s first-look deal with Sony Pictures via the duo’s new company Wonderlab, through which they’ll direct their own movies and produce other people’s work. Avi and Ari Arad are on board are producers.

A “Metal Gear Solid” movie, after all this time? It’s something fans of the stealth combat series, first launched in 1987 and with seventeen games total, have wanted for a long time. It’s also the second game created by Kojima to get adapted for the big screen in recent years. The other? A24‘s “Death Stranding,” with Michael Sarnoski on board to direct. Meanwhile, it’s worth noting that Sony had a previous iteration of “Metal Gear Solid” in the works back in 2020, with Oscar Isaac to star as Solid Snake and Jordan Vogt-Roberts to direct, but that never moved forward. As for who will play Solid Snake in Lipovsky and Stein’s film, only time will tell.

Other projects between Lipovsky, Stein, and Sony include an animated “Venom” movie they’ll direct, and “The Earthling,” an original sci-fi epic via Columbia Pictures. Eric Heisserer and Scott Glassgold are on board to produce the latter. Beyond the scope of Sony, Lipovsky and Stein have also worked on some other big projects recently, including the upcoming “Gremlins” film, which they wrote the script for.

Here’s a press statement from the filmmakers about their “Metal Gear Solid” film: “”Metal Gear Solid” was nothing short of a groundbreaking cinematic masterpiece that forever revolutionized video games. We are thrilled and honored to bring Hideo Kojima’s iconic characters and unforgettable world to life.”

Stay tuned for more details on “Metal Gear Solid” as they arrive. As for how big a budget Lipovsky and Stein will get for their adaptation? Expect it to be gargantuan: “Final Destination: Bloodline” made $317 million at the global box office on a $50 million budget, so Sony views this duo as serious moneymakers.
