Got a Tip?

HBO’s ‘Game Of Thrones’ Prequel Series About Aegon Targaryen’s Conquest Of Westeros Finds Its Writer

Thanks to the success of “House Of The Dragon,” expect many more “Game Of Thrones” spinoffs to make their way onto HBO over the next decade. And THR reports that the network has yet another “Game Of Thrones” prequel series in development. What’s new in the pipeline? A prequel to “House Of The Dragon” that covers Aegon Targaryen’s conquest of Westeros.

And now HBO has found their writer for the possible series: “The Batman Part II” scribe Mattson Tomlin. Tomlin’s other work includes uncredited edits on Matt Reeve‘s “The Batman,” the Netflix superpower actioner “Project Power,” and the Keanu Reeves comic adaptation “BRZRKR.” Tomlin also serves as writer and showrunner on an upcoming animated “Terminator” series at Netflix. So Tomlin has all of the necessary genre/fantasy credentials to pen a sound “Game Of Thrones” spinoff, even if his previous work has more of a sci-fi and superhero bent.

But what will Tomlin’s new series be about? The direct prequel to “House Of The Dragon” will recount the Targaryen conquest of Westeros, led by Aegon, his sister-wives Rhaenys and Visenya, and their dragons. Aegon unified six of the Seven Kingdoms in only two years, with Dorne the one kingdom to resist his influence. So, this show is about one of the biggest legends in George R.R. Martin‘s “Game Of Thrones” lore. A source told THR that the project will take a “back to basics” approach to Martin’s world, whatever that means. “Game Of Thrones” is complex world with lots of characters, locales, and political intrigue: not exactly the material for a “back to basics” story. Or maybe that means this new series will be a more straightforward, action-oriented take on the “Game Of Thrones” world.

But just because HBO has started work on this series doesn’t guarantee it will make it onto TV. The network has had several “Game Of Thrones” spinoffs in active development since the original series wrapped in 2019, with only two of those greenlit: “House Of The Dragon” and A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight,” which starts shooting this year. Other possible live-action spinoffs include “Ten Thousand Ships” and Kit Harington‘s Jon Snow series, while on the animated side there’s “The Sea Snake” and “The Golden Empire.” Other spinoff ideas like “Flea Bottom” haven’t been heard about in a few years, while another prequel series, “Bloodmoon,” was canceled by HBO after its pilot tested poorly.

A show all about the rise of the Targaryen dynasty could be fun, but it still needs to be greenlit after Tomlin writes it. And “House Of The Dragon” Season 2 needs to fare well with critics and audiences, too. The new season premieres this summer; stay tuned for an official release date.
