‘Shazam’: Director David F. Sandberg Says He Needs A Franchise Break & Could Do A Horror Film Next

Zachary Levi‘s Shazam flies back into theaters later this month in “Shazam! Fury Of The Gods” as the 12th installment of the DCEU. And the sequel sees Billy Baston and his foster siblings face off against the Daughters of Atlas to stop them from using a superweapon to destroy the world. But with all the upheaval over at DC Studios recently, will this be the final movie in the “Shazam!” series? According to director David F. Sandberg that’s all up in the air, but first, he wants to do something else before another one happens.

In an interview with The Playlist’s Charles Bramesco about the upcoming film, Sandberg disclosed the potential future of “Shazam!” as well as his own. “I don’t know about the full-scale plans, but they keep telling me that there’s nothing in “Shazam” that conflicts with what they’ve got in mind for the future,” Sandberg said about DC Studio’s plans for the character. “So maybe, yeah, there could be more “Shazam.” But as for me? I just did two of these in a row, so I need a little break. But if they want to do more, I’m more than happy to talk.”

Does Sandberg have anything particular in mind? Maybe a horror movie he almost started a few years ago. “I don’t know exactly what my next move is because we’ve got a few things at various stages of development,” the director continued. “The Culling” is one of them. We’ll see which one comes together first; that’s the approach you have to have. You get a lot of things going and then move on to whichever one can get the green light first.”

But why does Sandberg want do something else besides “Shazam!”? It’s mainly because he’s worked on hardly anything else in recent years. “Yeah, just because it’s been so long,” he confirmed. “I’ve been working on “Shazam” since 2017, something like that, multi-year projects. You just want to mix it up.” And a horror movie after two straight big-budget superhero movies would be quite the mix-up.

“Shazam! Fury Of The Gods” hits theaters on March 17. Watch a trailer for the film below.
