Got a Tip?

Netflix Joins Adam Sandler’s Next Project With The Safdie Brothers

It’s been almost three since The Safdie Brothers unleashed their last film, “Uncut Gems,” upon the world. And what a propulsive, manic, tense, delirious cinematic experience that one was, with Adam Sandler acting his heart out as gambling addict Howard Ratner. If “Good Time” didn’t make known that The Safdies mean business, then “Uncut Gems” finished the job. But that doesn’t answer the question on everybody’s mind: what’s their next project, and when is it coming out?

Deadline reports that the timeline for The Safdie’s next project is now coming into view, and it looks like the filmmaking brothers are reuniting with their “Uncut Gems” star. That’s right, Adam Sandler will star in The Safdie Brother’s next movie, which is now set to start production in Q2 of 2023. Sandler didn’t shy away from talking about the project on his press tour for “Hustle” earlier this year, but he forgot to mention something else. It now looks like Netflix is on board the project, too.

Netflix wouldn’t give any real details about the upcoming feature, but several sources tell Deadline that it takes place in the world of high-end card collecting. The Safdies are currently putting the final touches on the script, but it is still to be determined when they’ll start shooting the film. On top of writing and directing, The Safdies also produce the upcoming project.

Sandler received some of the best reviews of his career as Ratner in “Uncut Gems,” winning a Spirit award for the role. But his performance in “Hustle” for Netflix earlier this year was no slouch either. Of course, it’s been a known fact since “Punchdrunk Love” that Sandler will act his ass off when given the opportunity, but it’s nice to see he’ll do it next with The Safdies again.
