A24 has a bunch of buzzy theatrical releases this summer, like Celine Song‘s “Materialists,” Ari Aster‘s “Eddington,” and Spike Lee‘s “Highest 2 Lowest.” But nestled in between the release dates of Aster and Lee’s new films is “Architecton,” Victor Kossakovsky‘s doc about humanity’s relationship with stone, primarily through architecture.

At once a poetic meditation and a globe-trotting adventure, “Architecton” sees Kossakovsky reflect on the rise and fall of civilizations, the perennial importance of buildings to human culture, and more.
Here’s an official synopsis for “Architecton,” courtesy of A24:
An extraordinary journey through the material that makes up our habitat: concrete, and its ancestor, stone. Filmmaker Victor Kossakovsky raises a fundamental question: how do we inhabit the world of tomorrow?
“Architecton” is produced by Heino Deckert and Charlotte Hailstone.
Kossakovsky’s film had its world premiere in competition last year at the 2024 Berlinale, where it was nominated for the Berlinale Documentary Film Award. “Architecton” also had festival screenings at Hong Kong International, Karlovy Vary, Rome, Luxembourg, CPH:DOC, and elsewhere.
“Architecton” hits theaters on August 1. Watch a trailer for the doc below.
