'Divinity' Teaser: Steven Soderbergh Backs Another Trippy Eddie Alcazar Feature, Which Debuts At Sundance Tomorrow

As the Sundance Film Festival gets underway this weekend, the line-up boasts several films with plenty of intrigue for critics and audiences alike. But Eddie Alcazar‘s sci-fi thriller “Divinity” may rank higher than most in that regard, not just due to its delirious premise. Sundance hero Steven Soderbergh executive produces the film, after producing Alcazar’s 2018 feature debut “Perfect.”

Premiering in Sundance’s NEXT category, “Divinity” follows a scientist seeking immortality, the son who inherited his disturbed and destructive legacy, and a pair of siblings with plans to abduct him, and possibly save the world in the process.

Here’s the film’s official synopsis, courtesy of Sundance:

Set in an otherworldly human existence, scientist Sterling Pierce dedicated his life to the quest for immortality, slowly creating the building blocks of a groundbreaking serum named “Divinity.” Jaxxon Pierce, his son, now controls and manufactures his father’s once-benevolent dream. Society on this barren planet has been entirely perverted by the supremacy of the drug, whose true origins are shrouded in mystery. Two mysterious brothers arrive with a plan to abduct the mogul, and with the help of a seductive woman named Nikita, they will be set on a path hurtling toward true immortality.

“Divinity” stars Stephen DorffScott BakulaBella Thorne, and Karrueche Tran.  Moises Arias and Jason Genao round out the main cast.

Along with directing “Divinity,” Alcazar also writes the film’s script. The film continues Alcazar’s unique use of live-action and stop-motion in his movies. This isn’t Alcazar’s first trip to Sundance. He hit the festival in 2016 with his short film “FUCKKKYOUUU,” a collaboration with music producer Flying Lotus. Like “Divinity,” the short also occurs in a black-and-white sci-fi setting. Alcazar and Flying Lotus teamed up again for Alcazar’s feature debut “Perfect,” which had its world premiere at SXSW 2018.

Along with an executive producer credit on “Divinity,” Soderbergh’s other recent production credits include “Memories of Love Returned,” the Terry Southern documentary “Dad Strangelove,” and his upcoming limited series “Full Circle.” That show hits HBO Max later this year, but before that, Soderbergh returns to theaters this Valentine’s Day weekend with “Magic Mike’s Last Dance.”

Critics didn’t take to Alcazar’s “Perfect” in 2018, but maybe “Divinity” will win them over at Sundance. The film has its world premiere tomorrow. Watch a teaser for “Divinity” below.
