“Deadpool 3” will be the third film in the series, but the first time the merc with a mouth enters the MCU. And while Marvel fans are eager to see Ryan Reynolds constantly quip, break the fourth wall, and regenerate after being killed in another romp, it’s still unknown how Deadpool will fit into Phase 4’s larger saga.
Well, now fans have a couple of answers. On the “Post-Credit Podcast,” “Deadpool 3” screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick shared some tidbits about the upcoming film. For one, Reese described the script as “a wonderful opportunity for [a] “fish-out-of-water” [story].” Yes, Deadpool’s chaotic personality will certainly ruffle the feathers of the Avengers and other more orderly superheroes. “Deadpool is a lunatic at the center of a movie,” Reese went on, “to drop a lunatic in a very sane world, it’s straight butter. It’s going to be really fun.”
Reese and Wernick were coy on plot details, but they did mention that Deadpool’s entry into the MCU opens up many possibilities for the character. Reese described it as a “treasure trove of things to poke fun at now” but didn’t hint at who or what would get the brunt of Deadpool’s sass. When podcast host Eric Italiano queried about the infamous “Morbius” memes that went viral after that movie’s release, the pair noted that “we haven’t seen “Morbius.” We haven’t even seen the memes, but now it’s on our radar.” After Italiano suggested they work a joke about the memes into their script, Wernick responded, “now we’ll have to.”
Of course, that doesn’t necessarily mean Reese and Wernick will reference “Morbius” in “Deadpool 3,” but it could happen given Deadpool’s meta sense of humor. But there’s also limitless potential on what Deadpool could banter about in the upcoming sequel. To date, there are 28 Marvel films, with at least a dozen more on the way. That’s a lot of stuff Deadpool could possibly lampoon while he also has a new standalone adventure. And in a previous interview about their work on “Spiderhead,” Reese and Wernick stressed they wouldn’t mess with Deadpool’s tone and that “Deadpool 3” wouldn’t be a “Disney-fied Deadpool.” So, rest assured that whomever Reynolds faces off with from the MCU, the upcoming movie will stay true to form.
There’s no official “Deadpool 3” release date yet, but Marvel Studios anticipates it to be ready for 2024, six years after the release of “Deadpool 2.” Stay tuned for more details.
