Good news for those who loved the look of Glen Powell in a cockpit as Hangman in “Top Gun: Maverick.” Powell stars in another fighter pilot movie this Fall, assured to meet anyone’s “Powell in a cockpit” needs. And better yet, Jonathan Majors serves as Powell’s wingman.
Based on Adam Makos‘ 2014 book of the same name, “Devotion” follows Powell and Majors in the true story of two fighter pilots who become fast friends in the lead-up to the Korean War. And that friendship lasted through the war, with Jesse Brown and Tom Hudner becoming the U.S. Navy’s most decorated wingmen in the Korean conflict.
Powell became attracted to the project through word of mouth, and when he realized a few of family members had read Makos’ book. “A couple of different people had mentioned the book,” Powell told EW. “I ended up going on a fishing trip with my family and everybody was reading Devotion. My uncle had read it, my cousins were reading it, my dad was about to read it, and I picked it up. We got to talk about this story, and what it meant, and the fact that this was a war that no one knew about, a relationship that no one knew about.”
Alongside Powell and Majors, “Devotion” also stars Christina Jackson, Joe Jonas, Thomas Sadoski, and Serinda Swan (as actress Elizabeth Taylor). Rossy de Palma, Daren Kagasoff, Nick Hargrove, and Spencer Neville round out the main cast.
“Sweetheart” director J.D. Dillard helms the film from an adapted script by Jake Crane and Jonathan A. Stewart. Frequent David Fincher collaborator Erik Messerschmidt shoots the film. “Devotion” also has a lot of buzz following the announcement that it’ll have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival this September.
Don’t expect “Devotion” to be another “Top Gun: Maverick” just because it stars Powell as a fighter pilot again. “Really, these movies could not be more different,” Powell continued. “But at the same time I think they pair quite wonderfully together in terms of the legacy of naval aviation.”
Following its world premiere at TIFF, “Devotion” hits theaters on November 23, courtesy of Sony Pictures. Watch the exclusive new trailer for the film below.
