Criterion’s June 2025 Releases Include William Friedkin’s ‘Sorcerer,’ Sidney Lumet’s ‘The Wiz,’ ‘Thelonious Monk Straight No Chaser’ & More

What does the Criterion Collection have in store for home video enthusiasts this June? The boutique label just announced their new releases for that month today, with five new movies entering the Collection. Leading the pack?  A Sidney Lumet musical and one of William Friedkin‘s tensest efforts, as well as a classic screwball comedy, a doc about one of jazz’s greatest pianists, and a boldly unconventional film biography.

new titles include Sidney Lumet‘s musical take on L. Frank Baum‘s “The Wizard of Oz,” a classic screwball comedy, one of William Friedkin‘s tensest efforts, and a doc about one of jazz’s greatest pianists, and more.

First up, Lumet’s “The Wiz” gets the Blu-Ray and 4k treatment, entering the collection at spine #1264.  Criterion’s edition of the 1978 film includes new restoration, new audio commentary from film scholars Michael B. Gillespie and Alfred L. Martin, archival interviews, and more.

Next, “Thelonious Monk Straight, No Chaser” enters the collection at spine # 1265. The release of the 1988 doc includes an intro from director Charlotte Zwerin, an interview with Thelonious Monk‘s son, musician T.S. Monk, and an essay by musician and scholar Paul Grimstad.

Michael Leisen‘s “Midnight” comes next at spine #1266. The screwball comedy starring John Barrymore and Don Ameche gets a new restoration for the release, which also includes commentary by author and critic Michael Koresky, and essay by David Cairns, and more.

After that, William Friedken’s “Sorcerer” enters the Collection at spine #1267.  Freidkin’s remake of “The Wages Of Fear” gets a new 4k digital restoration, and includes the 2018 doc “Freiekin Uncut,” filmmaker conversations, an essay by Justin Chang, and more.

Finally, François Girard’s “Thirty Two Short Films About Glenn Gould” is spine #1268. The visionary portrait of the American classical pianist gets a 4k restoration, with the release also including commentary by actor Don McKellar, archival interviews, and more.

Criterion restores two former releases for June 2025, with Terry Gilliam‘s “Brazil” and Paul Schrader‘s “Mishima: A Life In Four Chapters” both receiving 4k UHD upgrades.
