The 2026 Cannes Film Festival is less than two weeks away, and that means the Cannes Market is heating up. Deadline has another buzzy project set to launch its international sale once the fest gets underway, and it’s an adaptation of a 2018 cancer memoir starring Awkwafine, Anthony Ramos, and Ken Jeong.
“Bone Lake” director Mercedes Bryce Morgan will helm the adaptation, entitled “Kaet Might Die,” with Awkwafina starring as a woman whose cancer diagnosis upends her life, and forces her to rely on humor and imagination to survive a crumbling marriage and overbearing family. Jeong co-stars as Awkwafina’s father in the film, with Ramos’s role still undisclosed. Angela Gulner and Yuri Baranovsky co-adapt Kaet McAnneny‘s memoir for the big screen.
Capture Entertainment will rep the project’s international sales at the Cannes Market, and co-rep it domestically with CAA. “Kaet Might Die” already wrapped shooting, so expect it to reach audiences by the end of 2026.
“This amazing script is based on a real story, but expressed through a lens that’s darkly funny, heightened, and wildly surreal,” Morgan said in a press statement about the film. “Because sometimes when things are dark, the best response is to find a way to still laugh through it all. Awkwafina navigates that tonal tightrope in a way very few actors can, and building a cast around her that could match that energy was incredibly important to me
“When Kaet first brought me her memoir, I thought her fearless and hilarious take on the worst moments of her life would resonate with audiences everywhere,” Moore continued. “But Mercedes and the team have brought that vision to life in ways beyond my wildest imagination, led by Awkwafina in a career-defining performance.”
As noted earlier, “Kaet Might Die” is already headed to post-production, so expect to reach audiences, either in theaters or on streaming, faster than one might think.
