'Balabusta': Julia Garner's First Project In Her Deal With Tomorrow Studios Is An International Jewel Heist Drama

Thanks to her Emmy-award-winning work in “Ozark” and her recent leading role in Netflix‘s “Inventing Anna,” Julia Garner is one of the “it” women of TV right now. And the high demand for her caused the actress to sign a first-look television deal with Tomorrow Studios earlier this year. While the studio behind TNT‘s “Snowpiercer” and AppleTV+‘s “Physical” only launched in 2019, they have big plans with Garner, and their first project together sounds enticing.

Variety reports that Garner’s first project with the upstart studio will be “Balabusta,” a drama series that centers around an international jewel heist. Garner will ostensibly lead the show’s cast, but no news yet on anyone else’s involvement. Studio head Marty Adelstein couldn’t be any happier with Garner’s being part of the series. “She’s very engaged and involved in every step of the way,” Adelstein said of the actress. “That’s probably one of the best deals we’ve ever made. We’re really happy to be in business with her.”

Of course, now that “Ozark” is over, Garner needs a new show to take over her acting workload. The Netflix series was a launching pad for Garner’s career, and her performance on the show won her Two Best Supporting Actress Emmys in 2019 and 2022. But “Ozark” looks to be just the beginning of Garner’s superstardom, as she recently nabbed the headline role in Madonna‘s upcoming biopic about herself, “Little Sparrow.”

As for Tomorrow Studios, led by Adelstein and Becky Clements, they have other projects in development beyond “Balabusta.” Earlier this month, the studio struck a deal with Ridley Scott‘s Scott Free Productions to adapt Jonathan Franzen‘s novel “Freedom” into a series. “Big Love” scribe Melanie Marnich adapts the novel about a married couple who start questioning their lives as American society crumbles around them. Tomorrow also has the manga series “One Piece” in production over at Netflix. And over at Showtime, they’re behind the series reboot of the vampire tale “Let The Right One In” with Demian Bichir.

An international heist drama with Julia Garner in the lead? That sounds like a solid premise for a television series, limited or not. More news about “Balabusta” will drop in the coming months, but count us in for this upcoming show.
