Who will be Denis Villeneuve‘s 007? That’s probably the biggest question swirling around Hollywood today, and several British actors are in the running, including Jacob Elordi, Tom Holland, and Harris Dickinson. But one of their fellow thespians wants no part in the race to become Bond: Taron Egerton.
THR reports (via Collider) that Egerton isn’t interested in even discussing him playing Bond with Villeneuve and new 007 producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman. “I think I’m too messy for that,” Egerton said of the role in a new interview with Collider. “I think I’m not [the right fit]— I really love James Bond and particularly Daniel Craig’s tenure.” Too messy? Well, the two “Kingsman” movies Egerton starred in are certainly messier than any Bond film. “But I think I wouldn’t be good at it,” the actor continued, “and I think there’s so many cool, younger actors who would be great for it. I think it would be wasted on me, probably.”
Amazon MGM Studios wants a young British actor for their next Bond, preferably 30 or under. Egerton, now 35, doesn’t fit those prerequisites any longer. But then, neither do several other actors arguably more suitable for the role than Elordi, Holland, and Dickinson. There’s Jack O’Connell, also 35; Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who’s 35 as well; and James Norton, now 40. For reference, Craig was 38 when he shot his first Bond film, “Casino Royale,” which should indicate just how youthful Villeneuve, Pascal, and Heyman want their new 007 to be.
Age aside, though, Egerton also thinks he’s well past the potential Bond phase of his career, a role he described as “quite an undertaking,” and rather restrictive. “As far as I’m aware, nobody’s asking me to do it,” he continued. “But also, it’s possibly not quite the thing that would make me happiest. It kind of consumes your life, a role like that.”
Indeed it does, so all the more reason for Amazon MGM Studios to make the right choice. Was that choice ever Taron Egerton? Probably not, but there must be a better possibility than Tom Holland of all actors donning the superspy’s tuxedo. Out of the three current frontrunners, this writer would take Dickinson, albeit begrudgingly. There are other options out there.
In any case, expect the next Bond actor to be announced before 2025 draws to a close.
