Charli xcx‘s ascent to pop culture superstardom hit overdrive last year with “brat.” But her transition to acting is only just beginning, and now powered by a new team-up with A24.
Variety reports that the pop star will produce and star in “The Moment,” an upcoming movie from the studio based on her original idea. And it’s the first project from Charli xcx’s new banner, Studio365, which hints that this may not be the last collaboration between her and A24. Scottish photographer and filmmaker Aidan Zamiri makes his feature directorial debut on the project and co-writes the screenplay with Bertie Brandes. A.G. Cook, a longtime producer for Charli, will also compose the film’s score. David Hinojosa leads producers via 2AM, with Mikey Schwartz/Wright and Zach Nutman on board as executive producers.
But what’s “The Moment” about? At this point, no one has any idea. But it’s telling that the official announcement for the project comes mere hours after Charli xcx received five nominations for the Brit Awards, including Artist of The Year, Album Of The Year, and Song Of The Year, among others. In short, Charli’s star is shining brighter than ever, and she wants to capitalize on it. But “The Moment” is just one of many acting roles the multi-hyphenate has lined up over the next couple years. And if those films do well? Then it’s another genius move for A24, with “The Moment” easily becoming a must-see pop culture event.
Charli xcx has several intriguing roles coming up before “The Moment” hits theaters. There’s Daniel Goldhaber‘s “Faces Of Death” remake, the director’s follow-up to 2023’s “How To Blow Up A Pipeline,” which will likely get a festival premiere this year. And then there’s Romain Gavras‘ first movie since “Athena,” the adventure comedy “Sacrifice,” which will also receive some festival buzz. But Gregg Araki‘s “I Want Your Sex“ is without a doubt Charli’s biggest film project to debut this year. Araki’s first film in over a decade also stars Cooper Hoffman, Olivia Wilde, Mason Gooding, and more. Expect the LA-set erotic thriller to hit Cannes, Venice, or another major festival this year.
Other upcoming films for Charli include Pete Ohs‘ “Erupcja,” Julia Jackman‘s “100 Nights Of Hero,” and Cathy Yan‘s “The Gallerist,” which makes six potential roles for her in 2025. That’s not a bad start to an acting career at all. But Charli’s acting chops remain unseasoned for now. Her biggest role to date is pulling double duty on “Saturday Night Live” last year, when she was the host and musical guest. She fared well on the show, though, which partially explains all the projects she’s involved in.
So when will “The Moment” hit theaters? Probably in 2026, and by then, A24 should have a good read on how Charli xcx performs on screen. But expect brat energy to inundate the 2025 film festival circuit in full force when “I Want Your Sex,” “Faces Of Death,” and “Sacrifice” get their world premires. Love it or hate it, the brat era of pop culture may be far from over.
