Variety reports that “White Noise” will feature the first new track from Brooklyn dance-rock band LCD Soundsystem in five yearsThe single, titled “New Body Rhumba,” will be released later this year. The news should be no surprise for fans of either Baumbach or LCD Soundsystem. Band frontman James Murphy wrote musical scores for two of Baumbach’s films, 2009’s “Greenberg” and 2014’s “While We’re Young.” So, “New Body Rhumba” comes as welcome but unsurprising news.

But will a new song from LCD Soundsystem be enough for Netflix to snag an Oscar for Best Original Song? Netflix has had five Oscar nominations in musical categories in the past four years, including one for Baumbach’s last film, “Marriage Story” for composer Randy Newman. But the music for “White Noise” may also be up for an Oscar win, as four-time Oscar nominee Danny Elfman pens the film’s original score.

In any case, a new song from LCD Soundsystem is cause for excitement. After becoming one of the biggest bands in the world in the 200s, Murphy and the band disbanded in 2011, culminating their time together with a massive farewell concert at Madison Square Garden. That show birthed the concert film “Shut Up And Play The Hits.” However, the group reformed just five years later to headline Coachella, prompting lots of fan criticism. The blowback was shortlived, however, as LCD Soundsystem released a new album, “American Dream,” in 2017, which earned the group its first Grammy and cemented its legacy. The band was recently in the news after its 20-date residency at Brooklyn Steel was cut short in December 2021 thanks to the Omicron surge in NYC.

As for “White Noise,” the film sees Noah Baumbach tackle Don Delillo‘s award-winning 1985 novel. The film follows a contemporary family attempting to navigate their everyday life and its mundane conflicts after “the Airborne Toxic Event,” a horrific train accident, casts chemical waste over their town. “White Noise” stars Adam Driver, Greta Gerwig, Don Cheadle, Raffey Cassidy, Alessandro Nivola, and André Benjamin.

So, with a new LCD Soundsystem attached to it, another reason to get excited about Baumbach’s “White Noise.” The film has its world premiere at Venice on August 31. Stay tuned to The Playlist for our coverage of the festival.
