DCU fans already knew Jason Momoa would show up as Lobo in this summer’s “Supergirl,” but in the blockbuster’s first trailer, released last month, the goofy antihero was nowhere in sight. That’s no longer the case, as James Gunn‘s social media posts for a Lobo-centric teaser and a new TV spot for the film give audiences their first look at the character.
And the initial takeaway? Eh, not great. It’s unclear if it’s the makeup, the scene’s lighting, or Lobo’s vibe in general, but Momoa’s rendition of the interstellar mercenary (a “dream role” for the actor) looks pretty weightless. Not even Momoa’s raspy, jovial charm helps the BTS teaser. “Finally!” cackles the actor when asked if he has any comments about playing Lobo, but the subsequent reveal looks carnivalesque in all the wrong ways. It’s too early to write Lobo (and “Supergirl”) off completely, but if this is the best director Craig Gillespie could come up with, this film may be in trouble.
Here’s an official synopsis for “Supergirl,” courtesy of Warner Bros.:
When an unexpected and ruthless adversary strikes too close to home, Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, reluctantly joins forces with an unlikely companion on an epic, interstellar journey of vengeance and justice.
“Supergirl” stars Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, with Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham, and Momoa rounding out the main cast. Ana Nogueira writes the film’s screenplay, based on Tom King‘s “Woman Of Tomorrow” comic. Producers include Gunn and Peter Safran, with Nigel Gostelow, Chantal Nong Vo, and Lars P. Winther on board as executive producers.
Maybe there’s more to Jason Momoa’s Lobo than this new disappointing reveal? Fans will likely find out whenever the new full-length trailer hits; in the meantime, check out the new TV spot and Lobo promo below. “Supergirl” hits theaters every one June 26.
