The script for the “Alien: Romulus” sequel is done, but Fede Álvarez isn’t on board to direct it.

The director broke the news in a new interview with Toofab. “We just finished the script, actually, for a sequel,” he told the outlet, but I’m gonna pass the torch on this one as director. I’m going to produce it, with Ridley Scott, we’re gonna produce it together, and we’re right now trying to find a new filmmaker to come in.” However, there’s no word on who Álvarez and Scott have talked to about helming the movie, so it’s up in the air when it’ll start shooting.

But Álvarez recognized that letting another director take over continues the franchise’s legacy, in a way. “I think that’s usually what has happened, except for Ridley, filmmakers come, you make one and you pass the baton to the next one,” he went on. “But we wrote the story because we really love what we started with ‘Romulus,’ and we want to continue the story. We love the story, and now we just want to find a director who really wants to go for the jugular.”

Plot details for the sequel remain scarce, but it will likely catch up with Caillee Spaeny’s Rain and David Jonsson’s Andy as they travel to Yvaga III. However, expect their journey to go wrong with the xenomorphs involved somehow. And no, there won’t be any crossover with the “Romulus” sequel and Noah Hawley’sAlien: Earth,” premiering now on FX; Álvarez hasn’t started watching the show yet, but according to TooFab, he’s heard “good things.”

So what will Álvarez direct next instead of a “Romulus” follow-up? “I want to work on a personal project that me and my co-writer, we’ve been keeping on the back burner for a while and we feel it’s the right time to go and work on an original,” he confirmed. “But I can’t tell you anything about it.” Maybe he’ll return to something in the wheelhouse of “Don’t Breathe.” We’ll see.

As for the “Alien: Romulus” sequel, stay tuned to see who takes over the reins of the sequel.
