At long last, “Merrily We Roll Along” hits theaters this December. No, not the long-gestating Richard Linklater movie; that won’t reach audiences for another 15 years, give or take. Instead, it’s a film version of Maria Friedman’s acclaimed Broadway production, complete with that show’s original cast.

Daniel Radcliffe, Jonathan Groff, and Lindsay Mendez reprise their roles in the revival of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s 1981 musical, about the turbulent relationship between a Broadway composer and his two lifelong friends.

Spanning three decades, MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG charts the turbulent relationship between composer Franklin Shepard and his two lifelong friends — writer Mary and lyricist & playwright Charley. Originally produced on Broadway in 1981, then becoming an inventive cult-classic ahead of its time, the musical features some of Stephen Sondheim’s most celebrated and personal songs.
Along with Radcliffe, Groff, and Mendez, “Merrily We Roll Along” also stars Krystal Joy Brown, Katie Rose Clarke, and Reg Rogers.
Friedman directs the film version of her 2023-2024 Broadway production, one of the most acclaimed events in recent Broadway history. “Merrily We Roll Along” broke the Hudson Theatre’s house record on Broadway during its run. The show then went on to win four Tony Awards, including Best Revival Of A Musical, Best Performance By An Actor In A Leading Role In A Musical, Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical and Best Orchestrations. “Merrily We Roll Along” also garnered the most five-star reviews in the history of London’s West-End, winning the Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival.
