'Nosferatu': Nicholas Hoult Excited To Meet Robert Eggers' Demands On Upcoming Horror Remake

Nicholas Hoult and Anya Taylor-Joy have much in common in their recent onscreen work. They star together in the culinary thriller “The Menu,” in theaters now. They both have also endured the grueling, chaotic sets of George Miller‘s “Max Max” movies, “Fury Road” for Hoult and the upcoming “Furiosa” for Taylor-Joy. And soon, Hoult will star in Robert Eggers‘ “Nosferatu” remake; Eggers and Taylor Joy have teamed up twice now, for 2015’s “The Witch” and this year’s Viking revenge saga “The Northman.”

It begs the question: Hoult may have braved Miller’s automobile antics on the set of “Fury Road,” but is he up for the demands of working with Eggers? After all, Eggers is nothing if not fastidious in his research, and what he demands from his performers is not for the faint of heart. Whatever happens, Hoult looks forward to working with Eggers and seeing if he’s up for the challenge. In a new interview with Collider, Hoult said Eggers’ obsession with his “Nosferatu” project is one of the main reasons he looks forward to working with him.

“I am a fan of the original, but I think knowing Robert’s work and knowing that he’s wanted to make this film and tell this story — I think he’s been obsessed with it since he was about eight years old, he told me,” Hoult said about the upcoming remake. The original “Nosferatu,” directed by F.W. Murnau in 1922, is a classic example of German Expressionist horror. While an unofficial remake of Bram Stoker‘s 1897 novel “Dracula,” Murnau’s film set the template for cinematic portrayals of vampires. It’s unanimously considered a masterpiece.

But will Eggers be able to remake Murnau’s film into his singular cinematic vision? Hoult certainly thinks so. “So, when it means that much to [Eggers] personally and knowing what he’s created with “The Northman,’” “The Lighthouse,” and “The Witch,” I’m like, his version of that story is something that I, as a fan, would be excited to see, so to get to go make it with him is something I’m really looking forward to.” It’s not as if other filmmakers haven’t remade “Nosferatu” over the years, too.  Werner Herzog remade Murnau’s film in 1979 as “Nosferatu The Vampyre,” with Klaus Kinski as the central vampire. In Eggers’ new film?  Bill Skarsgård plays the title role.

Beyond casting news, no one knows what Eggers plans to do for his “Nosferatu” remake. Along with Hoult and Skarsgård, Lily-Rose Depp stars as the young woman Skarsgård’s vampire focuses on. No word yet on who Hoult plays.  Focus Features produces the Eggers’ upcoming film, another period piece for the director, but beyond that, the project remains a mystery. Eggers almost started production on the project in Prague with Taylor-Joy and Harry Styles in the starring roles, but both stars dropped out due to scheduling conflicts. Now a new rendition of the film gradually moves forward.

As for Hoult, when he’s not playing Peter III on Hulu‘s “The Great,” which has a third season upcoming, he has another project adjacent to “Dracula” on the way. Next year, he stars opposite Nicolas Cage in “Renfield,” a horror comedy in theaters on April 14, 2023. But when will Eggers’ “Nosferatu” arrive? Wait and see on that news.
