The Russo Brothers Want To Make An Experimental Musical With The Weeknd For Their Next Movie

Now that “The Gray Man” has hit Netflix, what’s next for Anthony & Joe Russo? Well, their epic sci-fi series “Citadel” wrapped production last month, but no word yet on when the show hits Amazon Prime. And then there’s their other upcoming Netflix projectThe Electric State” with Millie Bobbie Brown, potentially heading into production this Fall. Beyond that, the Russo Brothers have a clean slate …or do they?

In a recent chat with Rolling Stone, the filmmaking brothers hinted at some ideas they have for their next project. And what do they have in mind? Well, it’s probably not what fans of the directors expect. “I’d love to work with someone who wants to do an experimental musical,” Joe Russo told the magazine on their Twitch channel. He added that he and Anthony have spoken to multiple musical artists about the idea, including The Weeknd. “I thought what he did during his Super Bowl show was awesome, continued Joe, “I’d love to see that as a movie.”

An experimental musical with The Weekend? That doesn’t sound like it’s in the Russos’ wheelhouse at first glance. However, The Weeknd’s Super Bowl Halftime show was a big-budget extravaganza, not unlike “The Gray Man” and its $200 million budget, which made it the most expensive Netflix movie ever. Is it a stretch of the imagination to see The Russos team up with one of the world’s most famous pop artists for a movie similar to what The Weekend pulled off earlier this year? Not really.

“The Gray Man” stars Ryan Gosling as a CIA mercenary chased by a former colleague, played by Chris Evans, after he uncovers dark agency secrets.  Ana de Armas, Billy Bob Thornton, Jessica Henwick, and Regee-Jean Page also star. Read our review of the film here.

Will The Russos get their man in The Weeknd and make a musical like they want to for their next project? In all honesty, there’s probably still lots of work left on “Citadel,” and plenty of ideas the brothers would like to hatch, including their “Secret Wars” movie. Both that and their movie in the Weekend may never happen, but they’re still cool ideas.
