‘The Electric State’: Netflix To Release The New Film From The Russo Brothers & Millie Bobby Brown

With Joe & Anthony Russo‘s spy actioner “The Gray Man” and “Vol. 2” of “Stranger Things” season 4 out next month, Netflix has two of their biggest tentpoles of 2022 landing in July. And now, the streamer has the Russos’ next film project in their pipeline, with one of the biggest “Stranger Things” stars in the lead.

Deadline reports that Netflix is on board for “The Electric State,” the Russos’ next directing gig that stars Millie Bobby Brown. Based on an illustrated novel by Simon Stålenhag, Brown will star as an orphaned teenager in a retro-futuristic past who roves the American West looking for her lost brother. News broke about the Russos-Brown team-up on “State” back in late 2020 when Universal had eyes on the project. Now, it’s a Netflix gig.

Outside of Brown, there are no other stars on board “The Electric State” yet. Rumors from last year had Chris Pratt co-starring, but no word on if that’s official beyond the actor being in talks for a role. The writing team of Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely, who worked with the Russos on their Marvel films, return to adapt Stålenhag’s novel.

Both The Russos and Brown have a ton of stuff upcoming on Netflix. While “Vol. 2” of the latest season of “Stranger Things” hits the streamer this Friday, Brown also has “Enola Holmes 2” and “Damsel” on the way. As for the Russos, “The Gray Man” hits theaters on July 15 before it premieres on Netflix a week later. They’re also producing a sequel to the Chris Hemsworth actioner “Extraction” for Netflix through their AGBO production company.

Expect “The Electric State” to start filming this Fall. Who will star aside from Millie Bobby Brown? Watch this space for casting updates. But given the budget that Netflix footed the Russos on “The Gray Man” (an estimated $200 million), expect a big-name star like Pratt to end up alongside Brown.
