‘The Fabelmans’: Steven Spielberg’s Semi-Autobiographical Movie Has Its World Premiere At TIFF In September

There were three years between Steven Spielberg‘s 2018 adaptation of “Ready Player One” and his remake of the classic musical “West Side Story.” But fans won’t have to wait long for his next film, “The Fabelmans,” to hit theaters. And now, Universal Pictures has the much-anticipated movie’s premiere lined up for TIFF this September.

The movie’s world premiere is Spielberg’s first-ever appearance at the festival, which, with Venice and Telluride, ushers in the Fall festival circuit that climaxes with the New York Film Festival. Neither TIFF nor Universal has an exact premiere date yet for “The Fabelmans,” but it will be between the festival’s running dates of September 8-18.

Spielberg’s latest is a coming-of-age tale set in post-WWII Arizona. It’s a semi-autobiographical film, too. Here’s an official synopsis for this film:

A deeply personal portrait of 20th Century American childhood, The Fabelmans is a coming-of-age story about a young man’s discovery of a shattering family secret and an exploration of the power of movies to help us see the truth about each other and ourselves.

Michelle Williams, Paul Dano, Gabriel LaBelle, and Seth Rogan lead the cast of “The Fabelmans.” The film also stars Jeannie Berlin, Julia Butters, Robin Bartlettt, Keeley Karsten, and Judd Hirsch. Other cast members include David Lynch, Mateo Zoryon Francis-Deford, Birdie Borria, Alina Brace, Sophia Kopera, Oakes Fegley, and Sam Rechner.

Spielberg co-writes the film with Tony Kushner, who previously worked with Spielberg on “West Side Story,” 2012’s “Lincoln,” and 2005’s “Munich.”

“The Fabelmans” is the most recent world premiere announcement for TIFF. Previously announced movies include Rian Johnson‘s “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,” Billy Eichner‘s “Bros,” Clement Virgo’sBrother,” and Sanaa Lathan‘s “On The Come Up.”

While there’s no official date yet for the world premiere of “The Fabelmans,” remember that the film releases in November later this year. The movie gets a platform-only release on November 11 before it opens in theaters everywhere on November 23.
