‘In Love’: George Clooney & Annette Bening To Star In Adaptation Of Amy Bloom’s 2022 Bestseller

Is George Clooney about to embark on a late-period renaissance, with “Jay Kelly” kicking off the revival? Between the upcoming “Ocean’s Fourteen and the just-announced “In Love,” it’s looking that way.

Deadline reports that Clooney and Annette Bening will star in an adaptation of Amy Bloom‘s 2022 memoir, subtitled “A Memoir Of Love And Loss,” with Paul Weitz directing. Weitz also co-writes the script with Bloom, a modern love story about a married couple who make an impossible decision together that honors their enduring commitment to one another.

“In Love” was developed by Eddie Vaisman and Julia Lebedev, with Andrew Miano and Weitz producing via Depth Of Field. Other producers include Clooney and Glent Heslov via Smokehouse Pictures, and Sébastian Raybaud via Anton. Anton also fully finances the pic and handles its international rights, as well as it US rights with CAA Media Finance.

“I have been so lucky to work with Eddie and Julie, so lucky to write with Paul and so grateful that this story of lasting love gets to be told on the screen, in Paul’s gifted hands, by two of the greatest actors in America,” Bloom said in a press statement about the film.

“In Love” marks yet another upcoming big-screen role for Clooney, who, in recent years, has become more multifaceted. For instance, the actor scored a Tony nomination for his Broadway debut in “Good Night, And Good Luck,” the stage adaptation of his 2005 film. And then there’s Clooney’s more recent directing work, like 2021’s “The Tender Bar” and 2023’s “The Boys In The Boat.” Clooney’s Smokehouse banner has him producing things now, too, like the Showtime series “The Agency,” with Season 2 on the way.

As for Bening, she stars next in Maggie Gyllenhaal‘s “The Bride!,” in theaters next March. Other upcoming project for the actress include two TV shows: “Lucky” at Apple TV opposite Anya Taylor-Joy; and the “Yellowstone” spinoff “The Dutton Ranch” on Paramount Network.

Meanwhile, Weitz is coming off of directing the Apple TV show “Murderbot” with his brother, Chris Weitz.

So, will “In Love” shoot before Clooney reunites with his heist-mates for “Ocean’s Fourteen”?  The actor hinted the long-awaited sequel will indeed shoot next year, but there’s still no director attached to the project, so take his words with a grain of salt.  As for “Jay Kelly,” Noah Baumbach‘s tragicomic look at celebrity, where Clooney plays an aging A-lister, that film hits theaters on November 15 before it premieres on Netflix on December 5.
