Taika Waititi‘s “Thor: Love And Thunder” hits theaters next Friday, the latest Marvel film on the big screen since “Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness” a couple of months ago. And both as a sequel to Waititi’s 2017 breakout “Thor: Ragnarok” and the latest Phase 4 saga, it’s the biggest MCU release yet in 2022. But does big also mean bloated? The movie boasts a massive ensemble cast beyond Chris Hemsworth‘s Thor and his latest adversary, Christian Bale‘s Gorr The God Butcher, and some people, like Peter Dinklage and Jeff Goldblum, saw their parts cut out of the movie’s final edit.
But Bale enjoyed his time with the actors even though their scenes together didn’t make it into the film. In a video interview with Entrevista, Bale said, “I got to work with Peter Dinklage, that’s not in the final film, but I got to work with him, he’s fantastic. I got to work with Jeff Goldblum, he’s not in the final film either.” Bale didn’t comment on what happens in these cut scenes, but he hinted that they were memorable. “And as you see, lots of stuff ends up on the cutting room floor even though it is beautiful, brilliant stuff.” Dinklage would have reprised his role as Eitri, King of the Dwarves, while Goldblum was back as The Grandmaster, two characters with deep ties to previous “Thor” movies. And while they’re not gods, Bale’s Gorr may have offed them in the deleted scenes.
“Love And Thunder” finds Thor searching for himself after the events of “Avengers: Endgame,” only to be thrust back into action when Bale’s Gorr The God Killer aims to eliminate all of the gods. Thor enlists Tessa Thompson‘s Valkyrie, Waititi’s Korg, and Natalie Portman‘s Jane Foster, who has since become The Mighty Thor, for his battle against Gorr. And The Guardians Of The Galaxy are along for the ride, too.
The movie also boasts a huge supporting cast beyond those characters, including Russell Crowe as Zeus, and Matt Damon, Sam Neill, Luke Hemsworth, and Melissa McCarthy as an Asgardian acting troupe. Lena Headey also had a role in the film, but her scenes aren’t in the theatrical release like Dinklage and Goldblum.
So, while Bale’s scenes with Eitri and The Grandmaster won’t be in the theatrical release, it’s safe to expect they’ll pop up when “Thor: Love And Thunder” gets its digital release later this year. There’s always a bunch of deleted scenes and behind-the-scenes bits that release concurrently with Marvel home releases, and Waititi’s latest should be no different.
