The droll humor indicated in teasers for the new series feels tailor-made for Rhys, too. He stars in “Widow’s Bay” as the new mayor of an island town off the coast of New England that’s full of strange old stories and local superstitions. Unfortunately for him and his aspirations to make the town a tourist destination, those stories turn out to be true…
Here’s an official synopsis for the series, courtesy of Apple TV:
“Widow’s Bay” is a quaint island town 40-miles off the coast of New England. But something lurks beneath the surface. Mayor Tom Loftis (Matthew Rhys) is desperate to revive his struggling community. There’s no wifi, spotty cellular reception, and he must contend with superstitious old locals who believe their island is cursed. He wants these people to respect him. They don’t. They think he is soft and cowardly. And he is. But Loftis is determined to build a better future for his teenage son and turn the island into a tourist destination. Miraculously, Loftis succeeds: tourists are finally coming. Unfortunately, the locals were right. After decades of calm, the old stories that seemed too ludicrous to be true start happening again. “Widow’s Bay” blends genuine horror with an undercurrent of character-driven comedy.
Along with Rhys, “Widow’s Bay” also stars Kate O’Flynn, Stephen Root, Kingston Rumi Southwick, Kevin Carroll, and Dale Dickey.
Katie Dippold serves as creator, showrunner, executive producer, and writer on the series. Hiro Murai directs five episodes this season, with Ti West, Sam Donovan, and Andrew DeYoung also directing. Executive producers include Carver Karaszewski, Claudia Shin, and Rhy. “Widow’s Bay” is an Apple Studios production.
“Widow’s Bay” premieres on Apple TV on April 29. Watch the latest teaser for the series below.
