Yesterday, the Emmy nominations were announced as HBO shows such as “The Last of Us” and “The Penguin” nabbing a hefty amount of noms, the latter starring Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti earned an impressive 27, and the video game adaptation nabbed 17 as well.
We now have some insight into the future of both those acclaimed shows after Variety recently interviewed HBO‘s Casey Bloys as they chatted about the shake-up on “The Last of Us” season 3 with the television studio aiming to have it ready by sometime in 2027 and adds that a second season of “The Penguin” is possible, however, with Matt Reeves busy on “The Batman Part II,” audiences will have to be patient as he completes that sequel first.

“The series is definitely planned for 2027. Craig is still working it out whether it will be two more seasons or one more long season. It hasn’t been decided yet, and I’m following Craig’s lead on that,” Bloys said of the current status of the show’s third season after the dramatic exit of co-creator/showrunner Neil Druckmann to focus on the upcoming Naughty Dog/PlayStation sci-fi video game “Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.”
Speaking of Druckmann’s exit, Bloys had this to say about it: “It was fantastic to have Neil involved. A lot of people don’t realize that Neil has a full-time job creating video games and running Naughty Dog. It’s a really big job that he’s got. So I understand why he needs to focus on that. But I believe he’s given us a good blueprint with the show. And obviously Craig is a pro, so I think we’ll be in excellent shape. I’m not worried at all.”
By the sounds of things, we don’t have to worry that Mazin is going to jump ship anytime soon. But they are still trying to figure out if they’re making two more seasons or simply doing one massive final one instead.
There is also some optimism about more episodes for “The Penguin” coming down the line. Bloys is still well aware that “The Batman” sequel for Warner Bros. and DC Studios is going to be taking up Reeves’ focus for the foreseeable future and likely places a season two on hold for the moment.
“The number one thing right now that Matt [Reeves] is dealing with is getting the movie going. I believe they’re making progress there. I know that he and [showrunner] Lauren [LeFranc] have talked about various ideas. So, could another chapter be in the future? Definitely possible. Right now, I think the priority for Matt is the movie. But I know that Lauren is thinking of various ideas that might work alongside the movie. I think it’s possible. I just don’t know at this point.”
Giving the creative team on “The Penguin,” including Reeves, some breathing room and time between seasons, likely won’t be the worst thing imaginable, and might hypothetically allow the second season to act as a bridge between “The Batman Part II” and “The Batman Part III.” Although we’re not exactly sure if Reeves is going to be rushing into anything after he completes his next Batman installment.
