‘Piggy’ Trailer: Carlota Pereda’s Sundance Horror Favorite Arrives In October

It’s late September, moviegoers, which means that horror movie season has commenced. And one of the more intriguing options hitting theaters this year is the Spanish film “Piggy,” which blew away audiences at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. And what’s not to love about the film’s premise? It follows a bullied girl in a small Spanish town who discovers a serial killer’s identity, but keeps quiet about it because, in some slanted way, they have similar motives.

That sounds like an intriguing blend of coming-of-age fare with horror movie tropes. But if that’s not convincing enough, here’s the film’s official synopsis from its festival run earlier this year:

With the summer sun beating down on her rural Spanish town, Sara hides away in her parent’s butcher shop. A teenager whose excess weight makes her the target of incessant bullying, she flees a clique of capricious girls who torment her at the town pool, only to stumble upon them being brutally kidnapped by a stranger, who drives off with them in his van. When the police begin asking questions, Sara keeps quiet. Intrigued by the stranger — an interest that’s mutual — she’s torn between revealing the truth and protecting the man who saved her.

“Piggy” stars Laura Galán, Claudia Salas, Carmen Machi, Pilar Castro, and Fred TatienCamille Aguilar, José Pastor, Stéphanie Megnin Vella, and Mabel del Pozo also star.

Carlota Pereda writes and directs the film, which looks like her big break-out. At least, that’s what Fantastic Fest thinks, as “Piggy” was the first film selected for the festival’s line-up this year. It plays at the Austin-based festival this weekend on September 25. And distributor Magnet Releasing feels similarly about the film. They and Alamo Drafthouse theaters give the movie a limited theatrical release on October 4 before it hits VOD on October 7.

So, is “Piggy” destined to become a modern horror classic? Find out when the movie hits Alamo Drafthouse theaters on October 4 and VOD on October 7. Watch an exclusive new trailer for the film below.
