'Beautiful': Daisy Edgar-Jones To Star As Carole King For Lisa Cholodenko's Musical Biopic

Daisy Edgar-Jones had a breakout year in 2022 thanks to turns in “Fresh,” “Where The Crawdads Sing,” and “Under The Banner Of Heaven.” Now it looks like the actress has a new project lined up. Variety reports that Edgar-Jones will star as Carole King in Sony‘s upcoming film adaptation of the stage musical “Beautiful.” Director Lisa Cholodenko will helm the film.

“Beautiful” will be another team-up between Jones and Sony after “Crawdads” earlier this year. Cholodenko reteams with Stuart Blumberg for the film’s script; they co-write 2010’s “The Kids Are All Right” together.  Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman co-produce “Beautiful” with Paul Blake through their Playtone banner.  Sherry KondorChristine RussellSteven Shareshian, and Mike Bosner are the film’s executive producers.

Sony’s wanted to make a film version of “Beautiful” since the Broadway production closed in October 2019. The musical played 60 previews and 2,418 regular performances during its run, and earned Jessie Mueller a Tony Award for her lead performance. The musical includes several of King’s greatest hit, including “One Fine Day,” “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,” and “You’ve Got A Friend.” On top of her singing career, King also provided chart-topping music for other singers including Aretha Franklin and Mariah Carey. Her Grammy-winning album “Tapestry” holds the record for the most weeks at No. 1 for a female artist.

“Daisy has a spirit and energy that I recognized as myself when I was younger,” King told Variety. “She’s a tremendous talent and I know she’s going to give a great performance.” Jones’ breakout performance came in Hulu‘s 2020 romantic drama “Normal People” with Paul Mescal. She recently received a Golden Globe nomination for her performance in FX‘s “Under The Banner Of Heaven.”

More news on “Beautiful” soon.
