So goes the set-up for “Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness.” The 28th Marvel film, and the fifth one of Phase 4, pits the titular master of the mystic arts against what may be his greatest adversary: himself. That’s right, Strange Supreme, an evil version of Doctor Strange first glimpsed in the Disney+ animated series “What If…?,” will be this movie’s big bad. Tying together with the events from other Disney+ shows “WandaVision” and “Loki,” this sequel to the 2016 film sets the table for the next slate of Marvel films and series.

Here’s the film’s official synopsis:

After the events of Avengers: Endgame, Dr. Stephen Strange continues his research on the Time Stone. But an old friend-turned-enemy puts an end to his plans and causes Strange to unleash unspeakable evil.

Benedict Cumberbatch returns to reprise his role as Steven Strange. Also back are Benedict Wong as Wong, Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, Rachel McAdams as Christine Palmer, and Chiwetel Ejiofor as Karl Mordo. In addition, Xochitl Gomez joins the cast as America Chavez, making her MCU debut.

Sam Raimi directs the latest Stephen Strange adventure, his first film since 2013’s “Oz The Great And Powerful.”  Michael Waldron, who already penned “Loki” for the MCU, co-writes the screenplay with Jade Bartlett. Composer Danny Elfman and Raimi’s long-time editor, Bob Murawski, are also on board.

“Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness” has a strong dose of horror elements to its set-up, a sweet spot for a director like Raimi. So, who will win in the Strange vs. Strange Supreme showdown? Find out on May 6, when the film hits theaters. Check out the new trailer below.
