'Jeanne du Barry' Trailer: Johnny Depp's Return To The Big Screen Opens The Cannes Film Festival On May 16

The Cannes Film Festival announces its Official Selections for its 76th edition next Thursday, but fans already know about some movies premiering on the Croisette this year.  Martin Scorsese‘s “Killers Of The Flower Moon” will be at the festival, for instance, as will James Mangold‘s “Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny.” And the opening film for Cannes 2023 has already been confirmed, too: Maïwenn‘s “Jeanne du Barry,” which also serves as the onscreen return for Johnny Depp.

And to drum up hype for Depp’s return, here’s a new trailer for “Jeanne du Barry.” In the film, Depps stars as King Louis XV, who falls in love with Maïwenn’s young courtesan and makes her his court’s final maîtresse-en-titer (chief royal mistress) as the French Revolution looms. Alongside Depp and Maïwenn, “Jeanne du Barry” also stars Louis GarrelPierre RichardNoémie LvovskyBenjamin LavernheMelvil PoupaudPascal Greggory, and India Hair.

“Jeanne du Barry” is Maïwenn’s third film as a director to have its world premiere at Cannes. And the actress-director has had great success at the festival. “Polisse” won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2011 festival. Then four years later, Emmanuelle Bercot won Best Actress at the festival for her role in “My King.” Let’s see if Maïwenn’s good fortune at Cannes continues at the 76th edition of the festival.

As for Depp, “Jeanne du Barry” is his first film since 2002’s “Minamata,” which next to no one saw thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic and Depp’s high-profile legal battle with his ex-wife, Amber Heard. Having the opening film at Cannes is a coup for the actor after what he’s been through the past few years. Will it be the start of the actor’s comeback? Maybe, maybe not: after “Jeanne du Barry,” Depp has no upcoming projects lined up currently.

In any event, “Jeanne du Barry” kicks this off on the Croisette this year as the opening film on May 16. Watch a trailer for the film below.
