David Tennant, MCU star? IndieWire reports that the ex-“Doctor Who” actor had his eyes on a certain role in “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” but alas, Kevin Feige & co. went in a different direction. But Tennant is all okay with that.
At the MCM Comic Con in London today, Tennant revealed he wanted the role of Mr. Fantastic in Matt Shakman‘s upcoming MCU entry before Pedro Pascal landed the role. “In terms of superheroes, I don’t know, I did slightly have my eye on Reed Richards, and unfortunately, it looks like they’ve gone in a different direction,” he joked after being asked what superhero he’d love to play. “Athough if it has to be someone, I’m happy for it to be Pedro Pascal, frankly.”
Would Tennant had been a better choice for Richards over Pascal, though? After all, Tennant has experience with franchises thanks to “Doctor Who” and “Harry Potter.” But the actor lacks the buzzy, in-vogue quality of Pascal, who also has franchise bona fides thanks to “The Mandalorian” and “The Last Of Us“. Not to mention Pascal is virtually everywhere nowadays, with five film credits in 2024 alone, and three this year, including “First Steps.”
That level of pop-culture visibility made Pascal an easy favorite for the Richards role, and Tennant is fine with that, although he still loves Mr. Fantastic’s superpowers. “I would have quite liked to be Reed Richards, I’d quite like to be able to do all that,” said the actor about the superhero’s elastic abilities. “So I’ll stick with that even though it’s gone, even though it’s gonna be a while before there’s another go at that, I think, unfortunately.”
Along with Pascal, “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” also stars Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Joseph Quinn, along with Ralph Inseon, Julia Garner, Paul Walter Hauser, John Malkovich, and Natasha Lyonne in supporting roles. Shakman’s film hits theaters on July 25. As for Tennant? His next film role comes in Chris Columbus‘ “The Thursday Murder Club,” which hits Netflix in late August. Watch the trailer for that one here.
So will David Tennant ever join the MCU? Never say never. The mega-franchise is ever-expansive, even if the studio has pumped the breaks in output the past year or two. Maybe there’s a superhero role for Tennant yet; one never knows…
