“Mortal Kombat” didn’t wow audiences back in 2021, but it did well enough in post-COVID theaters for Warner Bros. to greenlight a sequel. Okay, so what? Why should general audiences and fans of the video game series line up for “Mortal Kombat II” when it hits theaters this Fall?

Well, for one thing, the new film features fan-favorite characters from the franchise that weren’t in the first one, namely Johnny Cage, Kitana, and Jade. And with Karl Urban playing the Jean-Claude Van Damme cipher Cage, it’s safe to expect “Mortal Kombat II” will get more than a little meta (it already has, there’s a trailer for a Johnny Cage movie for your perusal below).
Here’s an official synopsis for “Mortal Kombat II,” courtesy of New Line Cinema:
From New Line Cinema comes the latest high-stakes installment in the blockbuster video game franchise in all its brutal glory, Mortal Kombat II. This time, the fan favorite champions—now joined by Johnny Cage himself—are pitted against one another in the ultimate, no-holds barred, gory battle to defeat the dark rule of Shao Kahn that threatens the very existence of the Earthrealm and its defenders.
Along with Urban, new cast for “Mortal Kombat II” includes Adeline Rudolph and Tati Gabrielle. Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks, Lewis Tan, Damon Merriman, Chin Han, Tadanobu Asano, Joe Taslim, and Hiroyuki Sanada all return to reprise their roles from the first film (except for Merriman, who plays a new character)
Simon McQuoid directs a script by Jeremy Slater for “Mortal Kombat II.” He also produces the film with Todd Garner, James Wan, Toby Emmerich, and E. Bennett Walsh.
“Mortal Kombat II” hits theaters on October 24. Watch the new trailer for the film below (as well as one for the fake Johnny Cage movie, “Uncaged Fury.”)
