‘In The Grey’: Guy Ritchie’s Actioner With Jake Gyllenhaal, Eiza González & Henry Cavill Remains In Theatrical Release Limbo

Will Guy Ritchie‘s “In The Grey” ever grace the big screen? Despite wrapping production in Summer 2023, the movie’s future remains in limbo, and, according to World Of Reel, it may remain that way for a while.

On paper, the film has all the star power it needs to be successful. With Ritchie behind the camera, Henry Cavill, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Eiza González star in an action vehicle about two extraction specialists and the high-level female negotiator they need to rescue; “a group,” the logline claims, “who operates in the middle of criminality and the law.” That set-up sounds right up Ritchie’s alley, in line with other recent work like “The Covenant,” “The Ministry Of Ungentlemenly Warfare” and “Wrath Of Man.” There’s just one problem: Lionsgate had the film set for a January 17, 2025 theatrical release, and that never happened. So what’s the status of this picture, and why hasn’t it come out yet?

A new Deadline interview with Black Bear Pictures president Benjamin Kramer and owner Teddy Schwarzman, the producers of “In The Grey,” sheds no light on the subject. When asked by the outlet about the market for the film, as well as another upcoming Ritchie pic, “Wife & Dog,” Schwarzman replied, “no comment.” Schwarzman also said “no comment” on whether both films remain Black Bear productions. That hints at an uncertain release status for each, but no apparent reason why. Maybe that means a buyer will emerge, or it could mean Black Bear distributes themselves. The main takeaway: Schwarzman wishes to remain silent on the matter.

“In The Grey” isn’t the only recent Ritchie flick to have issues getting theatrically released. “Operation Fortune: Ruse du Guerre” got pulled from its scheduled early 2022 run due to the start of the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian War. The film depicts Ukranian bad guys, a portrayal Lionsgate deemed in bad taste; the movie eventually hit theaters on March 3, 2023. But “In The Grey” seems to have different issues altogether than “Ruse du Guerre,” whether that be issues scheduling reshoots, Ritchie’s busy schedule, or Black Bear realizing they have a dud on their hands. Whatever the reason is, nobody is telling.

The status of “In The Grey” hasn’t stopped Ritchie from keeping up his prolific pace in completing projects. Since 2020, Ritchie has shot eight films and three TV shows, including two seasons of “The Gentlemen” on Netflix, with Season 2 premiering next year; “MobLand,” Ritchie’s other British gangster show, got renewed for a second season by Paramount+ in June. And despite dropping out of “Road House 2 earlier this year, Ritchie now has his sights on another sequel to direct: one for “Layer Cake,” with Jason Statham attached to star; he’ll shoot that in January. So, despite the mess surrounding “In The Grey,” Ritchie isn’t letting that project slow him down.

Still, “In The Grey” sounds like a bankable project, complete with a high-profile cast that’s worked with the director before. Not releasing this film at all would mean Black Bear leaves money on the table, right? Maybe an answer to this mystery will reveal itself in due time. Meanwhile, the cast moves onto other projects: Gyllenhaal to “Road House 2,” Cavill to “Highlander,” and González to “I Love Boosters.”
