'Barbie': Saoirse Ronan Is "Gutted" She Won't Be In Greta Gerwig's Upcoming Film Due To Scheduling Conflicts

After “Lady Bird” and “Little Women,” it’d only make sense for Saoirse Ronan to reunite with Greta Gerwig for her upcoming “Barbie.” And that was the plan until scheduling conflicts got in the way. But, due to that, unfortunately, Gerwig won’t be a “Barbie” girl next year.

People reports that Ronan intended to make a cameo in Gerwig’s very buzzy movie, marking the third time the pair have worked together, but Ronan had to drop out of the film. The reason’s an ordinary industry one. Ronan’s schedule on “The Outrun,” an upcoming drama about a recovering alcoholic, is filming in Scotland the same time Gerwig’s film heads to London to continue production. “I was supposed to do a cameo because I live in London and they were [filming] there,” Ronan told People. “There was a whole character I was going to play — another Barbie. I was gutted I couldn’t do it.”

Gerwig’s upcoming film stars Margot Robbie as the titular Mattel fashion doll, with Ryan Gosling stars as her beau doll, Ken. It’s Robbie’s first time working with Gerwig, but it wouldn’t have been the first time working with Ronan had she stayed on board. The pair co-starred in 2017’s “Mary Queen Of Scots.” Despite the scheduling conflicts, Ronan still hopes she’ll be able to swing a cameo, even if it’s a smaller bit than it already was. “I have texted Margot and Greta,” continued Ronan, “and I’m like, ‘If you’re doing any pick-up [shots], maybe I can just walk through the background?’

Ronan’s next film, “See How They Run,” hits theaters next Friday, September 23. The slapstick comedy period piece stars Ronan as Constable Stalker, a 1950s London police officer who teams up with Sam Rockwell‘s private detective to solve the murder of Adrien Brody‘s Hollywood director in the West End. That’s not exactly Ronan’s usual fare, but that’s why she took the role. “During [COVID] lockdown, I was being sent a ton of [scripts],” the actress said. “We were all just living in a time that was so sort of doom and gloom. It just felt like that’s what I needed as a person to have a little bit of respite from all of the seriousness.”

Meanwhile, “Barbie” is set for a summer blockbuster release date on July 21, 2023. Will Saoirse Ronan manage to squeeze in a brief scene before the film hits theaters? Never say never.
