Based on Marjorie Wallace‘s 1986 book of the same name, “The Silent Twins” recounts the beguiling true story of June and Jennifer Gibbons.  Wright and Lawrence star as identical immigrant twins from Barbados who begin to speak a private language and communicate only with each other after their family movies to Wales. When together, the pair craft elaborate works of fiction. Separated, however, they go catatonic. Smoczyńska’s film explores the strange, insular world the sisters create for each other.

O’Meally’s short film does the same, albeit in a slightly different way, as it expands the locus of “The Silent Twins” to explore the lives of other sets of twins. Watch the companion piece below.

“The Silent Twins” also stars Nadine MarshallTreva EtienneMicahel SmileyJodhi May, and Jack Bandeira.  Kinga PreisAmarah-Jae St. Aubyn, and Tony Richardson round out the main cast.

The Criterion Collection snatched up the home video rights to Smoczyńska’s latest shortly after its Cannes debut in the Un Certain Regard section of the festival. Criterion previously released Smoczyńska’s 2015 film “The Lure.” Read our review of “The Silent Twins” here.
